Which Model M keyboards are compatible?
The Mod My Model M kit is compatible with IBM Model M 101/102-key keyboards (ANSI layout) using 32-pin ZIF membrane connectors (0.5mm pitch). Compatible part numbers include 1391401, 1390131, 1390120, and similar variants manufactured between 1985-1999. Requires bolt-mod installation. For other models (terminal Model M, SSK, Model M2, Model M3, Model M4, or Unicomp), please submit an inquiry below.
Compatibility
Model M variants differ by part number, membrane connector style, and LED assembly. Use this compatibility matrix to verify your keyboard is supported.
✓ Verified Compatible Boards
These Model M keyboards are fully tested and confirmed to work with our kit:
- ✓1391401 — ANSI 101-key (most common Model M)
- ✓1390131 — ANSI 101-key (Enhanced Model M)
- ✓1390120 — ANSI 101-key (Standard variant)
- Flip the keyboard and read the rear label for the part number (e.g., "Part No. 1391401").
- Record the date code (usually a 2-digit year and week, e.g., "8852" = week 52 of 1988).
- Open the case (remove screws/bolts) and inspect the membrane tail connector: count pins and measure pitch if unsure.
- Check for bolt-mod: if held together by melted plastic rivets, you must bolt-mod before installing this kit.
This kit requires your keyboard be bolt-modded (plastic rivets replaced with M2 screws/nuts). If not already bolt-modded, you must perform this modification during installation.
Tools required: Drill with 3mm bit, M2 × 12mm screws (×20), M2 nuts, washers.
